Try Something New Tuesday – Free Will with God’s Help

“The Lord is on my side, I will not fear” (Psalm 118:6).

Ever feel like everything depends on you?  Sometimes I do.  This type of thinking places unneeded stress and physical illness on yourself.  It’s important to turn to God for help during these times. It is also important to listen to God.  He gives us free will to make our own decisions, but we can always ask for help.

This morning I’ve been thinking about the wise men visiting Christ as a child (Matthew 2).  It took the wise men about two years to travel to Jerusalem.  When they arrived looking for Jesus, the elderly and insecure Herod became concerned about his reign. So, Herod asked the Magi to report back the location of Jesus so he could also bring  gifts and worship.  Then, Herod sent out his scribes to follow the magi.  The magi brought Christ gold, frankincense and myrrh.  That night the Magi received a dream where they were instructed to return without reporting back to Herod.  Joseph also had a dream to take his family to Egypt immediately, and he did.  Then, the angry Herod decided to have all babies two and under killed.  God provided help, all involved had free will to make the right decisions.  The arrival of the magi provided notice to Herod of Jesus’s birth.  The gifts of the magi provided travel financing for Joseph, Mary and Jesus.  The magi had free will to go back to Herod or return.  Joseph had free will to pay attention to his dream or stay.  By listening to God and following his instructions Joseph saved his family.  Joseph had quite a bit of responsibility, but God was there to help all along.  Also, We never know when God is using us to help others.  God used the magi to help Joseph, Mary and Jesus, and they may not have even known.

So, today join me in trying to remember that everything does not fall on our shoulders.  With God’s help we can make good decisions and we might even help others.  God bless you.
