“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20 KJV
It’s Try Something New Tuesday and a great time to use our listening skills. There is so much going on in the world today that it can be overwhelming and depressing. Many of us our left wondering how to stop the world from spinning out of control. Others are avoiding watching the news. Yet, does that really make a difference at the end of the day.
There are a few things needed to truly make a difference in changing the circumstances of our world. First, we need God. God is the only one who can soften hearts and provide peace beyond our understanding in a world of chaos. When we are able to gather as Christians and find comfort in God together, the peace explodes exponentially. Second, we need to listen. When we watch and listen carefully to what is taking place and being said, we allow others to express themselves freely. I admit that it can be difficult to listen when we believe someone is wrong. However, that is when we need to sit quietly and listen the most. Sometimes all another person wants is to be heard. So, just listen to your children, your friends, people who are upset, and people who are hurt. As hard as it can be disregard personal attacks and actively listen. Third, we must manage our tempers. The easiest thing to do is throw a fit when we are frustrated. Yet, anger only leaves us more vulnerable to pain, because it is an emotion that lacks control. Finally, we need to love others. This can be the most challenging. How can we love others who disagree with our beliefs? It’s okay for them to disagree. We are all different. We may not understand why they believe what they do or why they are acting in a way that seems radical, but we can still love them.
Today, take time to listen, remain calm, love others and trust God. May God bless you.
